Geek Girl Authority Reviews The Last Huntress

An Interesting New Twist on Classic Mythology.

Excerpt below:

The Last Huntress is filled with Greek gods and myths, even a little from ancient Egypt. However, I will not divulge which ones because part of the fun was figuring out which myths and gods are in play. Lenore Borja does an excellent job of mixing myths into our modern world. As a lover of ancient mythology myself, trust me when I say that this novel scratches that itch for long-gone legends.

The Mirror Realm is such an interesting concept and Borja paints beautiful descriptions of the mysterious realm. At one point, the author describes the mirrors from all over the world in one place, wall to wall, for infinity. Through them, you could see people going about their business, unaware of what lies behind the reflection. Then, having the ability to instantly travel to these locations through mirrors. After I read this scene, I put the book down for a long time and just thought about what I would do with such power. Vacationing would be so easy. Ok, fine, save the world, then vacation.

Romance for a YA Audience

The romance was a little cheesy for my taste but I chose this book because of the mythology references, not necessarily the romance. Also, it is a YA novel and I’m old so, not exactly the target audience here. That being said, while I enjoyed this book as an adult, I would have absolutely loved it as a teenager. Luckily, the romance is just a small cropping of the larger picture. The relationships between Alice and the other girls are the focus throughout most of the novel.

Who? What? When? Where?

Between the Mirror Portals, several characters, different points of view, body swapping, and constantly changing settings, it can be a bit too much at times. Often while reading, I lost which character I was following or who was who and where everybody was. I either had to go back and try to figure it out or move on and hope it worked itself out. Towards the end, things get intense and you really have to pay attention. However, once I finished reading, things cleared up for the most part.

I love a good love story. From slow burn to first sight, it doesn’t matter. Add in paranormal, fantasy, or dystopian elements, and I’m all in. These are the stories I crave, so naturally, they are the stories I write!

My love for writing started in the 8th grade when I wrote a short story about a girl on the Titanic. I loved imagining who she was, her hopes and dreams, and how she ended up on that ship. Of course, it wasn’t Rose and Jack (by a long shot), but it planted the seed that would eventually lead to my career as an author.

Oh, I took a few detours along the way. I was an actor. A bartender. A financial recruiter. A human resources professional. I was a lot of things. But one thing I never stopped being was a lover of books. While I might gravitate toward a specific genre, I’ll read anything that engages and captivates me. Historical, Thrillers, Rom-Coms, Post-Apocalyptic, Sci-Fi, Memoirs, Young Adult, I’ll devour them all! (Okay, maybe not cookbooks. I’m useless in the kitchen – ask my husband)

The point is, I love reading. I love immersing myself in another world for a while. Writing takes this one step further; it gives me the privilege of creating that world. And to be able to SHARE that world with you, the reader? That might be my favorite love story of all.

A few boring facts about me (because my characters are way more interesting):

  1. Birthplace: Kankakee, IL (though I mainly grew up in Phoenix, AZ)

  2. Favorite Book: Not possible to answer, but if my cat’s life were on the line, then I’d probably say Jane Eyre

  3. Favorite Movie: No. Can’t do it.

  4. Favorite Series: Tie between Lost and Friday Night Lights

  5. Spirit Animal: Cat, obviously

  6. Zodiac Sign: Gemini

  7. Most embarrassing moment: Listing these factoids

See you on the page!
